Going to Hell

Maundy Thursday, we wash each other’s feet.

Good Friday, Tenebrae, we extinguish the candles slowly, one by one.

Holy Saturday, what do we do?

They say He went to Hell this day. Closed it down, rescuing the dead, the hurting,

the ones in limbo, the ones forgotten by the living.

And so it was they who were the first to experience Easter. Alleluia!

Metaphor, legend, or history …

Today is Saturday.

Holy Saturday.

Who may we rescue from Hell?

To whom may we give Easter?

We affirm that every one of us is held in Creation’s hand – a part of the interdependent cosmic web –- and hence all strangers need not be enemies; that no one is saved until we all are saved where All means the whole of Creation.
